The UK’s flooding season has begun

The UK has officially entered flooding season — and it’s already making its presence felt. Recent downpours have caused rivers to swell, roads to close, and homes to flood, marking the start of what could be a challenging few months ahead.

Several streets were left flooded as 28 flood warnings were issued across parts of north-west England after more than 20 hours of heavy rain.

The downpours left cars abandoned in Altrincham and Salford in Greater Manchester, while a major standby incident was declared in Warrington, Cheshire, which was later downgraded.

For many, the impact has been immediate: families forced out of their homes, businesses counting the cost of water damage, and motorists left facing long diversions as roads disappear under water. Local councils are stepping in with temporary shelters for those displaced, but the sense of unease is growing.

A resident of Penketh in Warrington, said the rising water levels had been "scary" for residents on their flooded road.

"We're at the bottom of the slope so everything that's coming down is coming this way so it's perfectly obvious to us that the drains aren't coping with it at all," he said.

"We do get this quite regularly - as soon as we have a few hours of rain, you can guarantee we 'll have a lake down here."

More than 1,000 properties across England have flooded amid heavy downpours this week, as temperatures look set to plummet at the weekend.

And this may just be the beginning. Forecasters warn that more heavy rain is on the way in the coming days, increasing the risk of further flooding. With winter approaching, officials are urging people in at-risk areas to stay alert, prepare emergency kits, and take practical steps to safeguard their homes.

The flooding season is here, and early preparation could make all the difference.
