Flood warnings miss the mark as most of London avoids extreme weather

Despite widespread alerts warning of flash flooding across London, many areas of the capital saw little impact as thunderstorms moved through the city on Monday afternoon.

Heavy downpours and hail did cause disruption in some isolated areas, including north London and the City of London.

However, parts of south west London, including Clapham and Wimbledon, basked in heat and sunshine, despite Met Office warnings to the contrary.

Where the flooding did occur in parts of central and north London, streets were left waterlogged, with hailstones reportedly covering some roads in up to an inch of water. The intense weather conditions led to blocked drains and delays to public transport.

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms earlier in the day, forecasting sudden, heavy showers and possible disruption.

At Previsico we issued alerts to our customers on Monday based on high-resolution granular forecasting. These effective forecasts deliver up-to-the-minute predictions for specific locations, allowing people and organisations to proactively prepare, taking precautionary measures in areas that are most at risk – rather than just a broad geographical area.
