Flood Modeller - UK

We are looking for an experienced flood modeller to join our growing team and help us to build scale our flood forecasting system models across the globe. There will be opportunities to work on various parts of the model set-up process, including helping to incorporate new datasets into our modelling architecture and helping to validate model outputs to drive improvements in forecast skill. Leading on the daily and historical validation of flood forecasting, you will source, evaluate and process key datasets.

Contributing to our flood forecasting product development, you will also undertake bespoke flood modelling and risk assessment projects. There are also opportunities to supervise junior GIS analysts to help scale up our team.

Key responsibilities

  • Sourcing, evaluating and processing key dataset for bespoke flood modelling projects and Previsico’s forecasting system.
  • Leading on daily monitoring and historical validation of flood forecasting using Python and GIS tools.
  • Sourcing flood data on a regular basis to help validate, calibrate and improve our forecasts, following flood events.
  • Leading and undertaking bespoke flood modelling and risk assessment projects.
  • Supervising junior GIS analysts and quality-control their outputs.
  • Contributing to Previsico’s flood forecasting product development by producing prototype python modules.
  • Respond to flood events and operational issues upon requests.
  • Supporting other software development and operational activities.
  • Write and support innovation grants.
  • Write project reports and support sale and marketing team when required.
  • Ensuring proper documentation.

Person specification

The ideal candidate will have a proven experience in python programming, 2D flood modelling, GIS and a related degree in Geography or Engineering with over three years of experience in flood modelling.

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in flood modelling.
  • A minimum of one years’ experience working in an agile commercial environment and willing to work in a busy innovative start-up company.
  • Experience of independently delivering flood modelling projects.
  • Experience of sourcing and processing large geospatial datasets for flood modelling and flood risk assessments.
  • Proven python coding experience and experience of delivering substantial pieces of python codes in a research or commercial environment.
  • Extensive experience with common geospatial processing Python libraries.
  • Excellent GIS skills and a proven record in delivering large-scale data products.
  • A sound knowledge of key concepts in hydrology and hydrodynamic modelling.
  • A sound understanding of data requirements and availability for numerical flood modelling.
  • Experience and knowledge in the field of flood forecasting and flood early warning.
  • Publication records.
  • An MSc degree or equivalent.
  • Experience of the AWS Cloud environment.
  • Experience of the full development lifecycle from requirements analysis to design, development, testing and implementation.
  • Experience of other geospatial product development.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively as part of a team.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop novel approaches to make improvements to our processes.

Pay and working arrangements

  • Salary will be competitive, reflecting the candidate’s skills and experience.

  • Flexibility in terms of working location, our Head Office is based in Loughborough but remote working will be considered.
