Working with BT and Zurich Insurance Group to proactively mitigate flood impacts across their network
BT, a global leader in communication services, encounters substantial challenges due to flooding, resulting in significant losses and disruptions to businesses.

BT, a global leader in communication services, encounters substantial challenges due to flooding, resulting in significant losses and disruptions to businesses.
The increasing frequency and intensity of floods, exacerbated by climate change and urbanisation, pose a substantial threat. With 3.5 million assets in the UK, BT must proactively safeguard its locations from the potential impacts of surface water flooding.
Flooding, the largest natural hazard in the UK, can lead to increased downtime for BT's customers.
Climate change-induced heavier rainfall overwhelms drainage systems, affecting communities in diverse ways. BT, with its vast asset base, must take proactive measures to protect its sites from the far-reaching impacts of surface water flooding.
In collaboration with Previsico and Zurich Insurance Group, BT has adopted a proactive approach to safeguard its sites and mitigate losses and disruptions.
Previsico's Flood Intel Platform provides early warning flood alerts for 5,000 BT locations in the UK, utilising proprietary live hydrodynamic modelling software. These alerts are delivered up to 48 hours in advance, empowering BT to take pre-emptive measures to mitigate flood-related impacts and losses.
The partnership with Previsico has provided BT with cost-effective, accurate and proven flood prevention measures.
This proactive approach enables BT teams to:
Mitigate flood impacts from surface water and ordinary watercourses, perils not covered by other forecasting systems.
Respond efficiently to unique events and address local vulnerabilities.
Set up defences such as flood doors and relocate valuable stock and equipment.
Pump water away from at-risk sites.
BT is constantly looking at ways we can increase our resilience to flood risk, which is a growing problem both in the UK and worldwide. The trials we're doing with Previsico and Zurich are looking at a different way of increasing the accuracy of our flood warnings; more accurate flood warnings can help us to combat climate change and support our ambitious sustainability targets.
